”SpiRituals”

Installation view The 3rd Biennale of Contemporary Art, Bourges, France

For this 4 screen videoinstallation, references of fiction and documentary filmmaking
are combined to create a hyperreal space in which the actors have performed a ritual of
transcendence.

The staging is  a four room apartment where we meet Daniel, Kyung Yeon and Kate,
each of them constrained to one room.
They where asked to write a personal essay, to do a daily routine or ritual, to walk with
closed eyes in the dark, and to sing how they remember the gospel ”Sometimes I feel
like a motherless child”, an old spiritual made known by the african american composer
Harry T. Burleigh (1866-1949) and passed down to him by his blind grandfather who
was a former slave. These where the "rituals", eventually leading to the final transcen-
dence or dissolving of their given/taken identities.

The subject is: What is the inner psycholocal condition of the migrant?

In an attempt to transcend the individual experience and the place/space itself , the actors
perform 4 situations to transcend their given/taken identity and their concepts of place
in social structures, by imagining themselves in space or in a third room in the appartment.
