I learned to TAKE CARE OF MYSELF (after Sophie Calle) [2010]
Installation View, RUNDGANG 2010, The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts
Wooden frames with glass 50X70 cm / 40X30 / 21X29, inkjet photo prints.
With a startingpoint in Sophie Calle´s "Take care of yourself" from 2007, I asked 4 adopted individuals to interpret the first letter I got from my biological father
after 24 years of separation, based on their different professions. In Calle´s original project, 107 women where chosen for their professions to analyze, dissect and understand the break-up letter from her ex-boyfriend, that ended with the sentence: Take care of yourself. I wanted the participants in the project to react to the letter
according to their formal, professional functions, but at the same time, they should all be able to relate to the letter deeply emotionally, on a private, personal level.
Therefore, they all had to be adoptees, but not necessarily Korean adoptees. The letter was the original from my father, translated from Korean to English. The participants
where documented with a portrait and their contributions underneath in black frames.
